First LNG Cargo Shipment Arrives at Canaport LNG

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada; June 27, 2009 – The giant liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker, Bilbao Knutsen, loaded with 3 Billion cubic feet (Bcf) (natural gas equivalent) of LNG from Trinidad and Tobago, arrived today at the just-completed Canaport LNG terminal in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada to unload the facility’s first shipment of LNG.

The ship’s historic delivery marks the start up of the state-of-the-art Canaport LNG terminal, which is co-owned by Repsol and Irving Oil Limited. Canaport LNG is the first land-based LNG terminal in Canada’s history and the first LNG terminal to be built on the east coast of North America in 30 years.

Natural gas from Canaport LNG ensures that Repsol customers will have access to competitively priced and readily available gas. In the northeastern US, Repsol also has firm supply contracts with a number of additional sources. Combining these assets with the natural gas from Canaport LNG, Repsol is now able to reliably supply 20 percent of the natural gas market in the northeastern part of North America, including the U.S.’s six New England states, plus New York State.

Once fully operational, the Canaport LNG terminal will have a firm sendout capacity of 1 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day, enough to heat 5 million homes.

“The arrival of the first LNG shipment to Canaport LNG demonstrates Repsol’s commitment to the LNG business and natural gas as the fossil fuel of choice, for today and for the future,” said Antonio Brufau, Chairman of Repsol. ”All of our LNG projects demonstrate Repsol’s ability to construct, operate and successfully commercialize complex energy projects.”

“We’re excited and proud to see the Canaport LNG terminal come online as part of our commitment to supply Maritimes Canada and the Northeast US with natural gas,” said Benjamin Palomo, Executive Director of Repsol’s LNG Division. “Canaport LNG secures our position as a major gas supplier to this growing market.”

Kenneth Irving of Irving Oil, said, “We would like to thank the Saint John community for its support, especially during the early days of this project when it was just an idea. We are proud to be associated with Repsol on this project and are grateful for the trust they have invested in us as their local partner.”

The terminal will provide natural gas to homes and industry in Canada and in the northeastern U.S. Once the LNG is regasified at the Canaport LNG Terminal, the natural gas will flow through the Brunswick Pipeline, a 90-mile pipeline connecting the terminal to the existing Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline (M&NP) at the Canada/USA border. Repsol has contracted to be able to utilize all of the capacity in the Brunswick Pipeline.

Canaport LNG’s General Manager, Jorge Ciacciarelli, said, “After three years of hard work, all of us associated with this project are very proud, and together we celebrate our achievement.

“As we move from construction at Canaport LNG to its full operation, we reaffirm our commitment to be a strong and responsible member of the Saint John Community and a good neighbor,” said Ciacciarelli.
